ROR Process

Return On Relationships: A 5 Step Model to Improve Your Relationships and Increase Your Results.

As a manager three tasks combined to create some of the trickiest work I had to accomplish. The first was how to establish productive relationships with the people I was now managing. Second was establishing a comparable footing with other managers in the various business units. Finally I needed to learn and understand the larger organizational perspective of my new boss and how to best help him achieve his goals.

I realized that the best way to improve my performance was to improve my communication, understand style differences, and manage my relationships. Over time I developed the following five step model to help me. You too can use this model to immediately enhance your effectiveness in relationships, improve your productivity, and increase the bottom line.

Create a Vision

First create a vision of what you want for all your relationships. To add value and deepen your vision consider the level of engagement you want in each relationship. Decide - from what perspective do I come to this relationship, what value can I add, what results do I want, am I willing to do the work to get those results?
Finally identify influencers that may impact your vision. Document your results.

Build a Foundation

You can’t think/act/measure ‘out of the box’ unless you have a box. Identify the things that need to happen emotionally, intellectually, and logistically to create your basis for your relationships. Document your results.

Create a Plan

Develop a roadmap that will get you from your foundation to your vision. Realize that you may hit roadblocks, detours, and find shortcuts on your way to your goal. Be flexible, adaptable, and maintain a sense of humor. You will have to change your plan! Document your plan, revise when needed, and keep your ultimate goal in mind.

Take Action

Work your plan and document your results.

Evaluate Your Results

Review the results of your efforts towards the relationship goals and objectives that you defined. Start the process over and continue to improve your Return On Relationships.
